With energy-saving lighting, you can save money and have a clean environment.
The project "With energy-saving lighting to savings and a clean environment" (acronym VARČUJ/ŠTEDI) was selected in the 2nd public call for proposals of the Operational Programme for Cross-border Cooperation Slovenia-Croatia 2007-2013.
Seven partners participated in the project, four from Slovenia and three from Croatia.
The lead partner of the project was the Municipality of Krško. Other partners in the project were: Local Energy Agency Dolenjska – Posavje – Bela Krajina, Local Energy Agency Spodnje Podravje, University of Ljubljana, Municipality of Jastrebarsko, Municipality of Zaprešić and Regional Energy Agency of Northwest Croatia.
Project objectives:
- Reduce the final use of electricity in the public sector and consequently light pollution and energy costs, thus increasing sustainable energy development.
- Develop joint measures to improve the energy efficiency of public lighting.
- Upgrade existing technologies in the field of public lighting.
- Use innovative approaches to reduce electricity consumption.
- Exchange experiences, knowledge, and good practices among experts in the border area.
- To establish long-term cooperation between Slovenian and Croatian public services, energy agencies, research institutions and companies.
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to meeting Kyoto requirements.
- Reduce the negative impact of public lighting on human and animal health.
- To raise environmental awareness of target groups in the cross-border area.
Project results
- Reduced direct light pollution in demonstration tracks for 100%
- Reduced electricity consumption in demonstration lines by 30 – 50 %
- Reduced CO2 emissions in demonstration tracks by 30 – 50 %

- Bilingual brochure with instructions on sustainable reconstruction of public lighting systems
- Workshops, professional excursions, seminars, etc.
